Until this season myself and my family have volunteered as guides cooks and whatever else they needed for the veteran hunt program put on by CWA. Age and some old injuries snuck up on me that prevented me from guiding, but I figured a few months ago I'd put in for some of the veterans hunts and see what happened. I was selected for the Colusa refuge hunt, wasn't really sure what to expect but I'm kind of a refuge rat anyways. There was 15 disabled veterans selected for this hunt, everything was taken care of from Colusa casino taking care of dinner and our rooms to the local Colusa refuge Hunters donating their time to take us out and show us a good time. The wind that day was forecasted at 20 + from the south, when we got to our pond there wasn't a breath of wind. Our two guides which included a wounded veteran as well put the birds in our laps. They say you can never stop learning about duck hunting, I learned a lot from these guys especially a very unique decoy spread. Birds started showing up right at legal shoot time and I'm glad we didn't hesitate to get some teal for the dinner table and a couple token gadwalls. The younger guy dusted a spoony on accident, we all got a good chuckle out of that because there was so many teal that we could have swatted them with a flyswatter. We were done just in time (8:45) for the southwind to show up and the birds to disappear. I know at times we all gripe and moan about the people that oversee our wetlands and govern our hunting, but I've never seen cooperation between DFG, the FEDS and CWA to make the day a success. The wildlife officers delivered each group of hunters to the pond from the parking lot on UTV's, this hunt would not have been possible for about 10 of the more seasoned veterans unless they had arranged that. the highlight of my weekend was watching the Vietnam veterans sitting around telling old stories, laughing about the misses and being recognized for the sacrifices they made decades ago for all of us. I consider them all Brothers and now friends. Thank you CWA for arranging this, hopefully next year I'll be back on board guiding a few hunts.
