Lived through the Great Depression, went to Univ of Kansas and graduated with BA in architecture, Married and moved to CA, began racing Porsche’s and Alfa’s in the 50’s, was a fine gunsmith and reloader, avid outdoorsman, and in the later years of life he loved rebuilding old VW Bugs like they were going out of style.
He passed away while I was in a very ignorant stage of life, and I really wish I would have spent more time with him than I did.

I've only got two or three of my Dad and Uncles fishing in Alaska.
Hope this thread is still open when my Grandson is old enough to post, cause he'll have a ton of photos of his Grandad.

I don’t know, let me check...

He was a Winchester guy... My dad and uncle both learned to shoot with the model 50 and when they were big enough, they got model 12s. I have my grandfathers’s model 12 with a poly-choke on it in the safe too.

    Model 50.
Thought I'd never find another shotgun I enjoyed shooting as much as my Model 50, 28" Mod barrel, and 2.75 chamber.
Now I shoot the A400 Beretta with a 26" barrel
If I still hunted pheasants I'd be shooting a model 50. So much lighter than the A400, but not as Steel friendly.

Made my guess about the gun in your picture base solely on the couple of inches of the forearm I could see, but didn't guess it was a 20 gauge.

Quite possible that he had a 20 and a 12 and the one pictured might be the 12. If he had a 12, my uncle might have ended up it and my dad with the 20. From what I understand, when my grandfather passed (1975), the two of them tossed a coin to see who got to pick first and then took turns choosing guns.

The 20 that's in my possession has a 28" full choke barrel... I killed a lot of doves and pheasants with that gun when I was a kid. I might have to pull it out and dust it off this September...

The vast majority of years I learned to duck hunt as a teen I had a brand new 3" Wingmaster, and the model 50.
I bagged far more game with the 50.
