I have a chance to hunt next week on a farm that has some really nice deer. 1500 acres and only one buck taken so far. The rut is over and cold weather is headed in. There are a lot of big bucks around. I saw one last time I was there that would go 170 or better, but about 100 yds away.

The place gets a lot of pressure but mostly gun hunters. I'll be bowhunting.

What is the best way to get a shot at a big buck?

Ha! You'd think so, but when everybody puts out a dumptruck full of corn, the deer just get fat and lazy. Seriously, people put out bait aren't killing any big bucks.

I'd look at some satellite pics, or use the Hunt-Wise app and mark where you know or think the stands are, etc. Look for the possible routes, ridges, saddles, et al, where the big bucks stay hidden this time of year. There's probably a few areas the others aren't covering, or are thick growth bedding areas they don't bother with, especially if any of them have corn feeders out.

    Good luck!

I have no sympathy for bait hunters be they duck or deer.

Try a different bait. Sweet feed was the ticket for some back home or molasses poured over the corn.

Or find a guy who has some good feists or beagles. Do it the Virginia mountain method.

Well, one of my buddies did just that yesterday and killed the biggest buck I've ever seen in the woods. He got it with a rifle. He's a good hunter and I'm happy for him.

It does. Apparently the best tactic is to ride around till you spot one bedded down by the road, then go back that affternoon and shoot it.

They'll be on food especially if it's actually cold. Also look for pinch points going from bedding to food and back.

    Good luck to you.
