That is an interesting hypothesis. This writer knows more than I, and his analysis is interesting. He just might be correct.

The midterm election results may have just assured Trump's re-election in 2020

The biggest winner of the 2018 elections was someone not on any ballot — it was President Trump, specifically, his 2020 re-election campaign.

Assuming the absence of catastrophic events like a war or economic collapse — and those things could happen — the midterms have perfectly positioned Trump to win in 2020. The narrow Democratic victory in the House will create an investigative and legislative horror show that will begin January 2018 and not let up for two years.

Radicalized by their base and unable to help themselves, the Democrats, newly in possession of subpoena power and in control of each House committee, will investigate everything that moves in the West Wing and in the Cabinet agencies.

Meanwhile, the conservative base will be galvanized by what they will regard as an obvious attempt by Democrats to stifle the Trump agenda and invalidate the 2016 election by swarming the White House with endless inquiries.

While there are still some politically smart moderates in the Democratic Party, even they may not be able to resist the demand from the base, which regards Trump with passionate loathing even President Richard Nixon couldn’t have imagined, to impeach the president.

That Democrats have been smart enough not to talk about impeachment too much during the campaign doesn’t mean they won’t be smart enough to resist it once in power. A good impeachment would be just the kind of freak show that would amplify the energy of an already energized conservative base as it watches the attempt to remove a president over political differences.

As Democrats take to their committee chairs and the Sunday talk shows and scream invective against Trump, they will be achieving absolutely nothing legislatively. Not only do they hate Trump too much to work with him, but their agenda will be way too far to the Left to move anything they pass through the Senate. Nothing will even get to Trump’s desk, as much as he’d enjoy vetoing whatever the leftists running the House send him. Democrats will spend the next two years proving to suburban moms and other swing voters that they can’t govern.

NO - because 2020 is two years away and anything could happen between now and then. War, famine, assassinations, etc....

I do think it made Trump more likely to be elected. The dems don't even have front runner at this time, so they will need to get their names out there. That means a lot of wannabe candidates are going to use the next year and half doing over the top leftist stuff to get the attention of the base. The house is not going to be able to resist being "the resistance" and doing stupid stuff. All in all I expect the Democratic party to go full in and stopping Trump, no matter what he does (good, bad, or neutral). If Trump came out tomorrow with a solution to the drinking water crisis in Flint MI, I would expect them to do everything in their power to stop him.

If they go all out against him I actually think he will enjoy that. His personality seems to thrive on chaos and conflict, because thats when you can make BIG moves. His twitter storms will become legendary over the next year, in my opinion.

Thwarting a president’s agenda... you mean like congressional Republicans did for much of Obama’s term? That is predictable and expected... if they go overboard with investigations and impeachment BS- that is what will get them into trouble for 2020.

Who knows what Dem strategists are thinking, but I'd say that following the "investigations and impeachment" path too stridently will eventually bite them in the azz because essential and higher priority things would be left undone.

As Coot stated 2020 is 2 years away and anything could happen. Remember also a lot of these same people that make these kinds of predictions made this one a two years ago...

    No. It didn't insure anything.

Two more years of actual wage growth, stable oil/gas prices, jobs gains, bringing troops back from the sandbox and/or making significant gains in that arena, removing the tariffs via trade deals, getting the FBI and CIA back as functional agencies, working on the Brexit/EU relationships, and working to make real progress on health care costs versus "insurance" and swapping paying premiums for taxes...those are the things that get Trump re-elected...

Increased school shootings, another housing crash, a war with NoKo or Iran, regardless of circumstance, a major market adjustment, going after Hillary or Obama or Comey, some major Administration scandal involving Trump, a gallon of Wesson oil, a spatula, two prostitutes and a couple of little people...those are the things that will get him voted out...and you know the Left is going to blame every bit of bad news on him. At least part of that is his fault, since he tends to take credit, but they are going to try and hang everything on his shoulders.

The predictions were alleged to not be that far off. The predictive ones looked at the national popular vote but overlooked the electoral college vote.

At least that's what I've heard.
