Well I’ll admit to shooting them on the water because I have a stew recipe that takes 6 or 7 birds and in 50+ years of waterfowling I’ve only had the opportunity to shoot 3 or 4 on the wing but “Coot Stew” is pretty good!

Also I knew a fellow that ran 20 dozen decoys on long lines for diver and 10 dozen were coots. Worked pretty well and yes he also killed a lot of Widgeon over that rig.

must be the widgeon wanted to steal "food" from the coots. I've read that.

Now only if I can get Roger to by 2 dozen of those. We would kill the ducks on a big pond we hunt. Where ever the coots are the ducks will land....
I think it's the species of duck decoy he doesn't own.

I'll probably only put out 7 Mallard decoys on our pond.
Went to the pond yesterday just to look things over
and had over 100 birds on the water.
About half were Mallards and half Widgeon --- a few others mixed in.
    Sometimes less is more.

My recommendation for cooking a Coot if you have to.
Stuff dressed Coot apples, celery and other favorite stuffings.
    Wrap Coot with bacon.
Go to woodshed and find a nice 1 inch thick pine cooking board.
Preheat oven to 250 and slow cook for 2 hours.
Remove from oven, throw away Coot and eat board.
Recipe passed on from Potholes Mark.
