Was a time when Gulf Coast blues virtually all wintered in the deep Louisiana coastal marsh and Gulf Coast snows virtually all wintered in the deep Texas coastal marsh. And the old, circa 1950s or so goose photos from our rice country just above the Louisiana coastal marsh's upper/fresh edge were of big Canadas that have long since quit making the trip. (Specks didn't grace us with their presence until later.) Then the snows and blues discovered rice was tastier than three-corner grass, moved into the ag lands, intermingled more and began pairing in mixed phases.

When I moved to SW Louisiana in '83, our area still appeared to winter six or eight blues for every snow, and the overwhelming majority of blues still sported their traditional gray bellies. Was appreciably easier to kill light geese then, but getting a white-bellied eagle head was still a slick trick, and I can remember feeling I'd done something pretty neat the first time I was able to pick out a then 5 or 7? bird limit of them. (Before skinning them for the gumbo pot.) Don't recall the date, but we even had two Canadian biologists studying the phenomenon camping in our guide shack pulling blue hearts for DNA samples. Do recall a friend with permits to raise blues saying he didn't know what that study cost, but they could have saved it by calling him.

Flyfisher's bird is a beautiful example of the mix.
